it seems as though if you shift perspectives from gdp and the 1.90$ per day figure, capitalism starts to not look so hot. i’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
At a glance, it doesn’t look like Hickel cites any better estimates. On the reliability of the estimates Pinker and I use, see this blog post at Our World in Data. My poverty estimates before 1820 are pure extrapolation and acknowledged as such; hence my language about “speculation” and such.
